Every summer, Jacksonville’s renowned Britt Music Festival headliner performances from around the world to sell-out crowds. All December long, its annual Victorian Christmas presents an enchanting trip back to yesteryear. Carolers stroll down Main Street dressed in nineteenth-century costume, horses’ sleighbells fill the air offering free wagon rides, and the aroma of roasting chestnuts tempts passersby. Father Christmas and his elves visit, too, of course, starting with a parade and all sorts of other holiday activities throughout the month.
HISTORY In the 1850s, the promise of gold first put Jacksonville on the map. Very quickly it became a lively mining town and the commercial and cultural heart of Southern Oregon, complete with shops, gambling halls and saloons. It was also the County Seat, until the neighboring town of Medford began to steal its thunder. Because Medford became a major stop on the new railroad, Jacksonville was no longer the boomtown it once was. Yet the Jacksonville residents’ pioneer spirit remained strong, eventually making it the vibrant community it is today.
